Obtaining of patent on Anti Rolling Tank System

MOL Dry Bulk Co., Ltd. (Representative Director and President: Kazuhiko Kikuchi, here after MOLDB) and IMC Co., Ltd. (Representative Director and President: Tomohiro Harada, here after IMC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU), jointly filed an application for patent “Anti-rolling system and method for ship s” and obtained patent rights on 31st, March 2022.

The special feature of the patented Anti-rolling system for ships (Note 1) is that it has a water level adjustment mechanism that conventional anti-rolling tanks (ART) do not have.
Conventional ARTs have a constant water level in the tank, and in some cases, the effect of reducing the fluctuation cannot be sufficiently obtained if ships carry many kinds of cargo.

The new type of ART has a water-level control mechanism, which is expected to provide a sufficient rocking reduction effect for general cargo ships carrying cargo that would be disadvantageous to conventional ARTs.

(Note 1) The basic structure of the conventional ART and the features of the patented mechanism are as follows.

It was estimated that the installation of the ART on a 17,500 DWT general cargo ship operated by MOLDB could reduce the rolling of ships up to 85% when carrying steel product cargo. It is also expected to prevent cargo collapse during transport by reducing the rolling of ships and reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by reducing the deviation from the route to avoid bad weather.

MOLDB and IMC investigate to install this system on bulk carriers in the future as well as on general cargo ships for which trial calculations have already shown favorable results with regard to the anti-rolling effect and will continue to study the installation in the future.
